Fat Grafting, also called Fat Transfer or Fat Injection is a minimal invasive surgical procedure to transfer fat from an area where it is plentiful to an area which has lost fat volume. Fat Grafting is most commonly performed by Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeons with the aim of improving and enhancing the cosmetic appearance of that area.

Fat transfer was first reported to be done in 1893 when a German Surgeon, Gustav Neuber transferred fat from an arm to the orbital region to correct some scars.

The popularity of the Fat Grafting procedure increased post 1990’s when Dr Sydney Coleman, a New York based Plastic Surgeon began publishing papers describing standard techniques for fat extraction, processing and injection.

Fat Grafting is a widely used technique today by Plastic Surgeons for adding volume and increasing the aesthetic appearance on the face, breasts, hips, buttocks, hands, feet etc

Fat Grafting Procedure

Your Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeon will first evaluate if you are the right candidate for the Fat transfer. This is based on the initial consultation, your medical history and a physical examination. After this, the surgeon will explain the procedure in detail, post procedure and the requirements from your side. You should clarify all your doubts at this stage.

The technique involves extracting adipose fat from a donor area using liposuction techniques. This is done manually using thin liposuction cannulas with small holes. The fat is commonly taken from the abdomen area or inner thighs. The 2nd step is of processing the fat by removing dead cells, excess fluids etc. This will leave only the viable adipose fat cells. The final step is reinjecting the purified fat evenly and in minute amounts into the area which needs improvement.

The procedure is done under local or General anesthesia. Smaller amounts of fat are extracted under local anesthesia. However if larger volumes of fat needs to be extracted, it is done using General Anesthesia.

It is a day care  procedure which can generally be finished in a couple of hours. You may be able to go home after the procedure same day or the next day.

You may have some pain/discomfort  for few days after the procedure. If required, painkillers will be prescribed by your Plastic Surgeon. There will be some bruises and swelling in the treated area. This will disappear after few weeks.

It might take upto 6 months for the surgical fat transfer to fully show effect.

It is common to feel temporary numbness. There will be some scars which will eventually disappear.

There will be regular follow ups with your Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeon post the procedure.
