The most prevalent issue in both men and women is hair loss, but it does hurt more for women who love to flaunt long, wavy tresses. It is common to lose a small amount of hair daily, but these strands grow again in a healthy person. This loss cannot even be recognized. Balding may occur in men and women due to different reasons. The pattern of balding though may differ between men and women. Hair transplantation is one of the best remedies to get a natural look all over again. Over the years, hair transplantation was thought to apply to men only. This is also because it was related to the pattern of baldness.

In female pattern hair loss, the regrowth of hair is very slow. Even the hair that grows back is very thin and brittle and falls off easily. The hair thinning for women may start at the part line and may spread throughout, making the top of the scalp visible. Hair loss in females may be due to several reasons. The dermatologist or the cosmetic surgeon needs to first ascertain this to decide on the transplantation procedure. Hair loss may be due to alopecia areata, low levels of vitamin B12, iron deficiency, psoriasis, or other scalp infections.

If any of the causes of hair loss for women is treatable, the surgeon will not resort to hair transplantation. If the surgeon feels that a hair transplant is needed, one of the two methods of transplant namely, Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) or Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is chosen. To some women who have extreme hair loss, it is quite difficult to go for hair transplantation. For hair transplant, a donor site is identified from where hair follicles are removed to be placed in the balding areas. This becomes very difficult as hair is not sufficient in donor sites in females with extreme hair loss. Another reason is that women do not have hair in other body parts like men that can be used in hair transplants.

While doing transplantation in female pattern hair baldness, the surgeon needs to take extra care. The graft and the donor site are preserved carefully, and the scalp is not shaved like in men. The surgeon also takes care of the angle and direction of the graft to give a natural look at the end.

Of the two methods of hair transplantation, FUE is considered the best method for women.  Here, hair follicles are removed one by one from the donor area and then placed at the thinning areas. It is a daycare procedure and is done under local anaesthesia. The FUT procedure is where the skin along with hair follicles is excised and the then each hair follicle is implanted in the balding area. A mild scar is seen at the place where grafting is done.

A trichologist who is also a surgeon trained to perform hair transplantation can carry out the process. This is only done after the exact reason for the same is ascertained. In most cases, the patients can resume normal activities within 4-5 days. The procedure is given a break and continued after an interval to allow better recovery.
